Chapter FOURTEEN
The interrogation room was a stark, claustrophobic cube with walls the color of stale cigarette smoke. A single fluorescent bulb hummed overhead, casting a clinical light over the steel table where Lyle Rhodes sat, his sleek black hair reflecting the harsh light. Clara observed him through the two-way mirror, her eyes tracing the jittery tap of his foot, the way his hands clenched and unclenched in his lap.
"Ready?" Derek asked, though his tone suggested he had already moved past awaiting her affirmation. It wasn't impatience; it was a silent acknowledgment of their shared determination to unravel the twisted narrative they'd found themselves in.
"Always," Clara replied, pulling her gaze from Lyle's reflection. She noted the tension coiled in Derek's posture, a physical echo of the psychological strain from his undercover days that sometimes resurfaced during cases like these.
They entered together, an unspoken choreography between them. Clara took her seat across from Lyle, her movements deliberate, measured. The room seemed to shrink further as Derek closed the door behind them, sealing off the outside world.
"Mr. Rhodes," Clara began, her voice steady, "you've been quite busy."
Lyle's piercing blue eyes darted between Clara and Derek, a trapped animal seeking an escape route. "I don't know what you mean," he said, but his voice lacked conviction, betraying the fear beneath his words.
"Come on, Lyle," Derek interjected, leaning against the wall with folded arms, "we have the files from your home. We know all about your⦠research."
The admission seemed to physically deflate Lyle, a sigh escaping him as he looked down at the table. "Okay, fine, yes, I obtained documents. Confidential ones. Thatâs what got me brought up on those trespassing charges" he confessed, the tremor in his voice palpable. "I know technically it was wrong, but the ends justified the means. What that company is doing is wrong, and I intend to prove itâ to expose them to the world. I just..."
He trailed off then, seemingly unsure how to explain in a way that wasnât going to get him into even deeper trouble.
"Is that why you ran when we came by?" Clara asked, her eyes locked onto his.
Lyle's gaze met Clara's, and for a moment, there was a flicker of something akin to relief in his eyes. "Iâ I wasnât running from you. I mean, I was, but I didnât think you were you. I thought you were coming from Avicenna."
âWe identified ourselves as FBI,â Clara countered.
âSure, but you think they couldnât send somebody to just lie about that?â Lyle said. âLook, I know too much. Iâm dangerous to these people, and theyâve already proven theyâre willing to kill to protect their secrets. Just look at what happened to Rebecca Walsh.â
Clara leaned in slightly, her eyes never leaving his face. She noticed the subtle shift in his demeanor, the way he seemed to be pleading with them to believe his words without actually begging. She searched those blue eyes for any hint of deception, but so far, she found none.
âI thought theyâd sent someone
